Viscosity Monotypes
January 8 – 10, 2021 Friday – Sunday 9:15 am – 3:15 pm Class held at Zavorskas Print Studio in South Orleans, MA register:http://www.capecodcreativearts.org
Monotypes are paintings on smooth acrylic plates transferred to paper once only using a manual press. Viscosity (means flowability of a liquid) inks are modified with oil or driers to be oily or stiff, so that one color repels another, with amazing results. Students are encouraged to make each print different, not to make an edition of exact replicas. An evocative, personal theme emerges with each print session. Contemporary experimental approaches with larger rollers produce magical surprises. The glistening layers of radiant ink create truly unique images with depth, mystery, memory and delight. Non-Toxic Etching Multiple Plates
April 2 – 4, 2021 Friday – Sunday 9:15 am – 3:15 pm Class held at Zavorskas Print Studio in South Orleans, MA register:http://www.capecodcreativearts.org
Using copper plates and non-toxic techniques, this workshop will introduce contemporary and traditional approaches to etching using hard ground, drypoint, aquatint and lift ground to produce line, texture and tone. Intaglio lines and marks, etched into the copper plate with the Edinburgh Etch ferric chloride (“rusty water”) in a covered vertical tank, retain ink when carefully wiped with tarlatan, and printed on dampened paper with an etching press. Students will create a small learning plate, then a larger plate, which can be transferred to additional plates for multiple color prints. They will learn how to mix and modify color inks, hand wipe the plate, register and print proofs, and begin a small edition. Monotype/Familiar Places
August 6 – 8, 2021 Friday – Sunday 9:15 am – 3:15 pm Class held at Zavorskas Print Studio in South Orleans, MA register:http://www.capecodcreativearts.org
Students will bring images of familiar beloved places, people or objects to class each day and create painterly spontaneous images on smooth acrylic plates using small rubber brayers, brushes, or stencils, and oil base etching ink. Dampened 100% rag paper placed on top of the inked plate, and passed through the press with gentle pressure, produces a unique impression that is intimately and permanently bonded with the fibers of the paper. The glistening layers of radiant ink create truly unique images with depth, mystery, memory, and delight. Demonstrations each day will help to develop individual explorations.
